Kate Howe

Howe’s work is informed by philosophy, poetry, literature, theatre, painting and her history of family quilt-making helped along by the ghosts that haunt her. Her practice is thoroughly research-based, and her methodology is grounded in the concept of path theory and Research-as-Fascia. Therefore, Howe’s research is full of the unexpected twists and turns which occur when desire dictates direction. Following this branch of path theory, Howe cuts abruptly across to recently discovered destinations, pulling threads across her painting practice and joining disparate islands of thought through the fascia of interconnected research.

Always preoccupied with the sociological conundrums of bias and point of view, Howe works to catch, frame and reframe moments in the social timeline. Howe explores the gritty dynamics of attraction. Her practice is situated in the moment of polemic decision: capitulate or resist. With this moment as the fulcrum of her practice, Howe’s works become an event, or a happening, born from resistance, gathering potentiality, heading toward limit, excess and Rupture.
